Some info from Allen Smithman

The name 'Smytheman' originated when a John Smythe (gaelic version being 'Gow") married a Rebecca Sandiman, and they amalgamated the names to Smytheman. This happened in Scotland. The Gows were weaponers for the Macpherson clan for 500 years. Gow is a sept of the Macpherson clan. So, contrary to everyone's belief, we are from Scotland.
So, if anyone wants to wear a kilt, look up the Gow tartan and we are correct in wearing it.
